The History of the Cleveland Guardians of Traffic
The Guardians of Traffic is the name for the eight statues that adorn four pylons on the Hope Memorial Bridge that crosses over the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland. The bridge construction was completed in 1932, and the Guardians were designed by sculptor Henry Hering and architect Frank Walker to symbolize the progress of transportation.
The pylons and statues are presented in an Art Deco style, with the Guardians being inspired by Greek sculptures (their Hermes-styled winged helmets being the most notable aspect). Each of the Guardians holds a different form of transportation: a stagecoach, a hay wagon, a covered wagon, a passenger car, a truck, a motor truck, a concrete mixer, and a dump truck.
Given their association with the city, their austere and imposing nature, and their close proximity to Progressive Field, the Guardians were chosen as the new mascot and team name for Cleveland’s Major League Baseball team, replacing the Cleveland Indians in 2021.
